De Hoop Nature Reserve

De Hoop Collection, situated in De Hoop Nature Reserve in Overberg, is yet another gem along on the Western Cape coastline. About 3 hours from Cape Town along the Garden and Whale route, this is a perfect weekend getaway from Cape Town or a stopover while traveling along the coast.

While it is slightly ‘off-the-beaten’ track, the long drive off the main road into the reserve is all worth it. Surrounded by endless fynbos and the odd buck or ostrich, the old farmstyle cottages at De Hoop Collection are perfect for a private getaway.

The Setting

De Hoop Nature Reserve is located along the coastline and forms part of a World Heritage site.  The coastline is one of the largest Marine Protected areas in Africa and has an amazing feel of untouched land. While there are many visitors to the reserve (not only guests of De Hoop Collection), you still get a feeling that you are the first person discovering the area.

The beach is beautiful, with big white dunes separating the thick bush from the beach and crashing waves over the rocks. There are a few small beaches that you can relax on – can’t say much about swimming as the water is always freezing! Or you can go for walks and explore the rock pools.

If the beach isn’t your thing then you may enjoy the fynbos and wildlife in the area, the most common being eland, bontebok, zebra and ostriches.

The Accommodation

Accommodation at De Hoop ranges from self-catering cottages to fully-catered suites. We stayed in one of the self-catering cottages (sleeping 6) and had everything we needed – from fully-stocked kitchen to big barbeque (a braai in South Africa) area outside. These cottages are ideal for families.

The cottages are quaint and homely, decked with an inside fireplace for those chilly winter nights and comfy couches to curl up on with your book.

If you don’t feel like cooking then you can go enjoy a meal at The Fig Tree Restaurant, they have breakfast, lunches and a set dinner menu.

The Activities

If you’re keen to get out into nature and go exploring then there are mountain bikes that you can rent, hiking trails and quad-biking available. You can join in on one of the guided walks, they offer both a bird walk and a marine walk. Then at night you can go star gazing – because you are in the middle of nowhere the stars are absolutely spectacular!

If you love nature and learning more about conservation then De Hoop will be your haven. There is more than enough land to explore.
